A terminal diagnosis in a family will have emotional and practical implications for a child. This module helps to prepare you to provide effective support to children, young people and their families before their loved one has died, enabling them to cope in a healthy way, create positive memories for the future and adjust to life beyond their loss. A member of our Macmillan family support team will assist offering first hand experience and advice.
This course aims to
- Provide knowledge of how to offer effective support to children and young people who have a family member with a serious illness
- Build confidence in communicating with children and young people using verbal and non-verbal skills.
- Explore how a child’s stage of development will affect their understanding

Anyone working with young people in social care, health and education including youth workers, clergy, emergency services, funeral directors and counsellors.

One of our Macmillan Family Support Workers will be assisting us on this course. The team possesses a wealth of experience of working with children and their families and includes a qualified drama therapist, social worker and HSLW experienced in helping children with special needs.
