From 2km to 50km: Sarah’s first ultra trail raises hundreds for Jigsaw!
Inspiring local running club member, Sarah Begley, took on the High Weald 50km ultra trail run and raised an amazing £771 for Jigsaw this June!
You might be surprised to learn that Sarah has not always been a keen runner, she says:
I have been a member of East Grinstead runners for almost three years. This ultra run was my first ever long-distance run. Before joining the club, I didn’t have any interest in running, I started by running 2km then slowly increased my distance until I reached 5km. I now have found a love for running around the surrounding countryside of East Grinstead exploring the trails.
I heard so many club members over the years taking on crazy distances and never saw myself doing it. Then I did a half marathon and thought ‘why not give a marathon a go’? I wanted to really challenge myself, so went the whole hog and booked a 50km trail ultra.
Sarah trained for the epic challenge using a 12-week programme created by head coach of East Grinstead Runners, Tim Winkley. Many club members with long distance experience supported her with helpful advice in the build-up to the big day.
Whilst the hills and the heat proved gruelling, the breath-taking scenery of the High Weald provided a welcome distraction and Sarah really enjoyed running alongside three fellow running club members.

Congratulations Sarah on your remarkable achievement and thank you so much for your brilliant fundraising efforts. As a mother of young children, Sarah says she wanted to raise money for Jigsaw because she ‘couldn’t imagine how to support them during a bereavement.’ Her hard work will help us to be there for more bereaved families and those facing the loss of a loved one when they need us.
