Sackville Lodge, East Grinstead Masonic Centre’s incredible support for Jigsaw South East
Marking 150 years with enduring support of local community based charities.
Reaching 150 years is a remarkable milestone for any organisation, and for Sackville Lodge at East Grinstead’s Masonic Centre, this represents a proud legacy of community spirit, fellowship and charitable giving.
As the Lodge approaches its sesquicentennial celebrations, that long established tradition of philanthropy continues through its renewed support of Jigsaw South East.
Founded in 1876, Sackville Lodge was the first Masonic Lodge established in East Grinstead and remains the town’s oldest Masonic Lodge. What began with meetings at the Crown Hotel grew steadily over the decades, reflecting the development of Freemasonry across the region. In 1898, a landmark moment arrived with the opening of the Masonic Temple in St James’s Road, giving Sackville Lodge a permanent home and creating one of only a handful of dedicated Masonic buildings in Sussex at that time.
Over the past century and a half, generations of members have contributed not only to the Lodge’s rich history but also to the wider community. Charity has been a constant central pillar of Freemasonry, and Sackville Lodge has consistently sought ways to specifically support local causes.
That commitment is especially meaningful during its sesquicentennial in the context of its valued help for Jigsaw South East. As a local charity, Jigsaw South East is focused on providing vital bereavement support to children and young people struggling to cope with the death of a loved one or preparing for a family bereavement. Sackville Lodge was keen to use this special moment in its history to recognise the valuable impact Jigsaw South East has on local children, young people and their families.
Following a very generous initial donation of £5,000 in 2024, Sackville Lodge has now exceeded any expectation by making another grant, this time at nearly £10,000. It is helping to ensure that local families can continue to receive timely, compassionate care, guidance and support. It is a partnership that perfectly reflects the values that have sustained the Lodge since 1876: community, kindness and practical support for those who need it most.
As Sackville Lodge looks forward to celebrating 150 years of history, its support of Jigsaw South East demonstrates that while much has changed since 1876, its commitment to serving the local community remains as strong as it did in those very first days of its existence.
