Thousands raised as inspirational runners take on the London and Brighton Marathons for Jigsaw South East

This spring, an incredible team of runners took on the London Marathon and Brighton Marathon in support of Jigsaw South East, raising vital funds for bereaved children and young people across Surrey, Sussex and Kent.

From emotional finish lines to unforgettable moments on the course, every runner had their own powerful reason for taking part and together they achieved something truly incredible.

Poppy’s Incredible Marathon Journey

Among the runners was first time Marathon runner Poppy Lara. Poppy and her children are currently being supported by Jigsaw South East following the death of husband and father, Aran, making her fundraising journey especially meaningful.

After crossing the finish line, Poppy shared:

“It was harder than I imagined, hotter too! But absolutely amazing! It was a completely unique experience that’ll stay with me forever. It was an amazing day. I’ve already gone from ‘never again’ to maybe one day again! The kids had a blast, especially wearing the medal.”

She also spoke movingly about the pride she felt after completing such an enormous challenge while juggling family life and grief:

“I just feel so proud of myself – which, when you are a single parent juggling life and naturally sometimes dropping balls isn’t always the case! We are mostly very hard on ourselves! I am thrilled with how much money has been raised – £17,000!!!! And I’ve somehow got the running bug too, extra bonus. I still cannot stop smiling and remembering moments on the run.”

The Jigsaw Team feel incredibly proud of Poppy too, we’re all truly inspired by her determination and outstanding fundraising efforts, an incredible achievement that will help ensure more bereaved children and young people can access specialist support when they need it most.

A Special Connection on the Start Line

Fellow London Marathon runner Jayne Davies also chose to support Jigsaw South East and unexpectedly met Poppy before the race began. With more than 59,000 participants taking part, the two runners finding each other at the start line felt especially meaningful.

Reflecting on the experience, Jayne said:

“Taking part in the London Marathon was such an amazing experience, the atmosphere and the way it brings people together is something really special to be part of.”

Jayne, who works as a mental health social worker, also shared how hearing Poppy’s story reinforced the importance of Jigsaw South East’s work:

“Hearing her story really brought home the impact and importance of the work you do in supporting Poppy and her children.In my role as a mental health social worker, I see firsthand how vital it is for children and young people to have the right support when they’re facing the death of a loved one.”

Two runners with mojo!

At the Brighton Marathon, Catherine and Emma – both members of local running club Mojo Runners –  proudly ran in support of Jigsaw South East, helping raise both funds and awareness for bereaved children and young people.

Following the event, Catherine said:

“It was such a pleasure to run for Jigsaw, thank you so much for trusting us with the places and so glad to hear that the funds raised will be put to such good use!”
